Excelsior
"Refit"
Class Studio Miniature
Dubbed "the Great Experiment," the first
Excelsior Class vessel was launched in 2285 as a test bed for the
unsuccessful transwarp drive development project. The ship, later
refit with standard warp drive, became the prototype for the numerous
Excelsior Class starships built over the next several decades. Among
these ships was the U.S.S. Enterprise-B, the third Federation starship to
bear that name. Other
Excelsior Class starships have included the Hood ("Encounter at
Farpoint" [TNG]), the Repulse ("The Child" [TNG]), the Intrepid (Sins of
the Father" [TNG]), and the Gorkon ("Descent, Part I" [TNG]).
